In February 2010, following on from the formal resolutions of December 2009, the entire PCC spent a Saturday morning with Canon Andrew Tuck, the Rector of St Andrew's, Farnham, (a church which has recently undergone a very dramatic re-ordering). Working together in a number of groups, the members of the PCC (without any input from the clergy) looked at different topics to do with the use and life of the church building, and came up with the following list of conclusions - or wishes!
What is our purpose? To respond to Jesus’ love for all through what is going on in the church. It must be inclusive and open. It’s too dark and must be brighter, especially around entrance.
Crossing the threshold The doors must be open. People must be given an excuse to come in - exhibitions, etc. It must be warm It must be a place of welcome, both from people and the building itself. It could/should host: harvest suppers, Christmas fairs, a centre for the unemployed, inter-faith gatherings.
What do we need to worship? Beauty, holiness and spirituality. Adaptability and flexibility Engagement for everyone (in terms of sightlines), esepcially children - but with space for the ‘less engaged’. Capacity for traditional large events. Toilets Space for smaller groupings for worship
Children Must be able to see what’s going on and engage with the clergy during worship. Space for pre-Sunday Club age Toilets, including a changing area Storage for toys, etc Opportunity for multi-media worship Sound-proofed space for Sunday Club to see the worship A space for a band and/or drama Flexibility
Hospitality TOILETS! A servery Refreshments on offer during the week Coffee in the building on Sunday mornings Access for all It must be open and in use Parking Hospitality for children Flexibility |
What kind of events should we host? Worship events Fun events Concerts / exhibitions / pantomimes / Eistedfodd / discos Nursery Pre-School Outreach Drop-in / Counselling Centre Wedding & Baptism celebrations
In conclusion, the PCC considered the implications for 100 years time and said that
What we do must be 'state of the art'It must reflect who we are, and embody every member ministry
We must not clutter the building
We must keep a record of what we do - and why
The building must speak of God, both in the mundane and the glorious.
